Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada - the last heaven here on earth. We all need a bit of heaven at times, to get us through the challenges of life. And what a rock she is! Solid, now more so than ever, with business developments and a government that is trying to utilize the resources we have in our beautiful province for the greater good. Newfoundland and Labrador … the name sounds like a tourist destination.
The purpose of this article is two-fold: 1. Promote Newfoundland and Labrador as a Tourist’s Valhalla to the world and 2. Promote the beauty in nature on this island for us all to take advantage of here in “our own backyards” (in order to stay focused, lower stress levels and live healthier).
Once upon a time we utilized the “exterior” of our province for business – the shorelines – to make a living. The fishery was the backbone of North America and helped get this continent started. While the oil and gas industry is now the “fishery” of the new millennium, we must use the “interior” of our island and promote tourism to the world. People pay big dollars to “get away” from the stresses of day to day living.
A few years ago I encountered a wealthy businessman from Chicago while fly-fishing for Atlantic salmon on the Pinware River in Southern Labrador. He told me that he “lives for July” every year in order to come here to our province to get away from the hustle and bustle of big city life. It helps him refocus, relax and relieve stress while he plans for his year ahead. We cannot put a price tag on the value of such a retreat. These types of tourist activities are priceless and this gentleman represented one of MANY!
The list of tourism activities for business development is abundant:
Hunting, Fly-Fishing, Camping, Sightseeing, Whale-watching, Canoeing, Kayaking, Skiing, Snowmobiling, Boat Tours, Cod Jigging and of course Corporate Retreats where companies visit for a week to plan, have meetings, take in some activities and prepare their business agendas. It all makes logical sense for better business living.
For the people in our province, this opportunity is often missed. Nature is the ultimate place to get away and de-stress. Nature can be the place where you solve some of your business challenges: while casting a fly on the Humber River or hiking Gros Morne Mountain as you reflect about business and about life. Go and experience nature as you ponder your business, your life.
This is not a status quo tourism or travel experience. Pristine wilderness, untapped and untouched by the engines of industry offers every business professional an opportunity of a lifetime. We can predict that much tourism business will be international. Europeans love to travel! Let’s go get them and show them what a place to visit and what a place to do business. We certainly live in one of those “have-to-be-there-to-appreciate-it” regions … heaven on earth. What a place to visit and do business!
