"YOU CHANGED MY LIFE!" I recently received this comment from an employee of
an International Airline company. She was an attendee at one of my
Corporate Speaking Engagements last year. I was at a hotel and she spotted
me and was ecstatic to share that comment as I parted one of the rooms. I
smiled and said, "Thank You.keep going forward on your new journey." Jim
Rohn, who has been dubbed the Greatest Motivational Speaker of ALL TIME by
Nightingale Conant, is correct: one of the greatest feelings on earth is
having your name appear in someone's testimonial as the person who helped
someone get on a better life track. A powerful "feeling" came over me as I
sauntered down the hall and out of the hotel.
I thought about this as I drove away. She gave me the credit when in fact I
did not do most of the work! She did. It also brought back memories of a
young man who was suicidal and he came to see me as his plan to end his life
was in place. It was then I introduced him to the field of Personal
Development. This was tough work for him, being down and out, wanting to
end it all. Yet he pulled through. He went to work on himself. Daily.
Searching, reading books and getting involved in the community gave him a
purpose to get out of bed in the morning. When he was strong enough, a few
months later, I gave him the message he needed for further reinforcement. I
told him "You did most of the work!" I was just the spark to help start his
fire. He agreed and his self-esteem soared once again.
Helping people help themselves is my life motto. The only person we can
change is the one in the mirror. In reality, it is all self-help at the end
of the day. Counsellors, doctors, speakers, friends and associates can
provide a life-changing spark or idea but it is up to YOU to make the
changes. Many never make those simple life changes and remain stuck, hoping
to win the lottery to fix it all. The two messages I received at the end of
2008 may apply to you:
- The first was from Wayne Dyer. It is simple: have a life purpose. I
took it a step further: even if you are in a job you do not like and are
stuck, at least have a purpose in providing for your kids and your family or
helping your friends whenever possible. Then when you are strong enough and
the time is correct, you can go SEARCHING for a better place of employment.
- The second was from Vic Johnson. At the 2004 Jim Rohn event he told his
story. Vic commented that money was a strange phenomena: the less he chased
it and the more he worked on his life purpose of helping people, the more
money he made. It makes sense.
Fish, don't hunt. Why chase "things" when the real secret is becoming a
person who is a magnet of influence? My new book "Fishing for Reality"
covers unique ideas to get people started on a better life path in all major
areas. We all must start somewhere. In writing the book it has also given
me much life purpose: to become like my grandfather and help people. He
said "helping people out is what life is all about." I never doubted his
wisdom and I will not start now! The skippers who sailed the high seas
LIVED the law of attraction and all of the other positive thinking ideas
that have been handed down through the ages. Saying something is one thing,
taking action is quite another. Our forefathers and ancestors had a life
purpose: to get us here today. As 2009 continues and as time flies by
quickly, take action! Go searching for YOUR life purpose and help out
others in need. Being a spark in someone's life, when there seems to be no
hope at all for them, defines human excellence at its best. Helping others helps us
find real meaning in "what it's all about." And may you continue on your
own Personal Development journey ON PURPOSE!
